Dance Media // Selected Works 2012 - Current
By the time you see something, it's too late. This is what shooting dance is like, and as a subject, it exercises a set of anticipatory muscles like few others. For a photographer typically engaged with the technical rigors of large scale commercial work, the process of shooting dance returns me to photo fundamentals and has made me a much better photographer in the process.
In 2012, after being sent out for a small "test" shoot, I started being commissioned regularly for Dance Media, first for Pointe, followed later with Dance Magazine and Dance Teacher. Starting out, I wasn't aware the process was going to awaken such a mix of excitement, awe and reverence for dancers and the work they do. In all I've shot nearly 40 editorials and a handful of covers, and had the pleasure of witnessing and engaging with some of the most elastic and transcendent minds and bodies in the industry (like Misty Copeland, pictured above).
What follows is a small collection of images featuring artists, in order of appearance, such as: Wendy Whelan & Desmond Richardson, Gisele Bethea, Leah Cox, Robert Battle, Melissa Toogood, 3rd Rail Projects, Victor Quijada's Rubberbandance, Gennadi Nedvigin, and ending on a mix of dancer Zack Tang and Victor Quijada himself.
